EmpiriQuant is an independent publication launched by Torin Bakos in September 2025.

Origin & Concept:

Science and mathematics have been a passion and fascination of mine from a young age. In my mind nothing more clearly defines modern science than the scientific method; though dynamic in nature, it is always rooted in empirical techniques and bolstered by statistics. With these ideas in mind, a combination of the words “empirical” and “quantitative” fit perfectly, and so EmpiriQuant was born.

EmpiriQuant serves as a venue for my explorations across a broad range of topics. In these investigations, I aim to apply rigorous, empirically grounded, and quantitatively informed frameworks.

My desire to understand the interlinked nature of our world led me to a career in capital markets; as such, finance and economics are frequently the lenses through which I conduct my analyses. With that said, nothing on this site should be construed as investment advice.

I aim to be as transparent as possible with the processes used in each article by ensuring proper citations are included for my references and data sets, and when possible, the code files used in my analyses are available to audit.

Mission Statement & Pillars:

EmpiriQuant’s mission is to illuminate complex questions through rigorous, data‑driven inquiry that prioritizes transparency, reproducibility, and scholastic excellence.

EmpiriQuant is committed to:

  • Empirical Rigor: Ground every exploration in verifiable data, robust methodologies, and proper citations.

  • Quantitative Clarity: Leverage the power of mathematics and statistics to transform raw information into distilled insight.

  • Open Scholarship: Share each analytic process openly for community audit and collaboration.

  • Consistent Excellence: Uphold a high editorial standard through adherence to the pillars.

Statement on AI Use:

No content on this site is written using large language models.

AI tools have become ubiquitous in our modern lives. I use them every day in both a professional and personal context. I think that professionals who shun AI tools will increasingly be at a disadvantage to those who embrace them; working with LLMs has a certain nuance that is best learned with a hands-on approach. So while I do utilize these tools in other areas, using them while writing these articles would defeat my primary goal for EmpiriQuant: personal growth.
